Prayer – Communication with the divine. Forms of
prayer are requests for yourself or others. Prayers
are a direction of psychic energy towards a goal.
Karma – In Hinduism karma means ‘deed’ or ‘act’. It
dates back to the early Upanishads, around 1500 BC.
Karma describes the universal principle of cause and
effect, action and reaction that governs all life.
Because man acts with free will, and creates his own
destiny, karma is not fate. There are 3 types of
karma: sanchita, the sun total of past karma that has
not yet been resolved; prarbdha, a portion of sanchita
that has to be experienced in this life; and kriyamana,
karma that humans are currently creating now. The
playing out of karma can take many lifetimes. What you
give out is what you get back. If you give out bad
thoughts then they will return to you. The same goes
for good, give out kindness, love and joy and you will
receive it back. Jesus describes Karma as ‘you reap
what you sow’.
Reincarnation – The belief that the soul returns after
death to a new physical body to live another life.
Some religions believe that after death the spirit of
the dead person separates from the body, one part goes
to the spirit world and becomes a spirit while the
other part returns to earth to be reborn. Any Karma
built up over the past life/lives is still carried
forward into the next one, so that lessons are learnt.
Affirmation – A positive phrase or sentence that is
repeated frequently and uses the power of your mind to
create a truth or reality. Affirmations are very
powerful when repeated over and over again. The words
become embedded in your brain and create new pathways
of thought and action.
Higher Self – The term ‘Higher self’ or ‘higher
consciousness refers to the concept that each one of
us has a part of ourselves that is thought to act as a
bridge between the spiritual and the mental and
physical dimensions of our awareness. In simple terms,
there is thought to be a part of us that is a
reservoir of higher wisdom that can help guide is
through our lives. This part of us can see more
clearly and see the bigger picture. Acting with the
guidance of our higher self can lead us in the
direction of greater fulfilment.
Afterlife – Also known as life after death. The
continuation of existence beyond this world or after
death. There are many different beliefs as to what
happens to us after we pass. Some religions believe
that good souls become angels, where as bad souls do
not get transformed until the last judgment.
Spiritualists believe that we pass into another realm,
and continue our spiritual progess, and become one
with the Divine.
Akashic Records – Akashic is a Sanskirt word meaning
the fundamental etheric substance of the Universe.
According to Theosophy, the Akashic Records, or Book
Of Life, is extrasensory information that exists in
another dimension, like the ultimate cosmic library.
The records contain information and all world events
and all thoughts and deeds that have taken place or
will still take place on earth. They may only be read
by adepts ( a person who has achieved the highest
mastery). Some psychics say they consult the Akashic
records through clairvoyance or during out of body
experiences.
Akashic Records are also known as the Universal Memory
of Nature.
Ghost - A ghost - or spirit or apparition - is the
energy, soul or personality of a person who has died
and has somehow gotten stuck between this plane of
existence and the next. Most researchers believe that
these spirits do not know they are dead. Very often
they have died under traumatic, unusual or highly
emotional circumstances. Ghosts can be perceived by
the living in a number of ways: through sight
(apparitions), sound (voices), smell (frangrances and
odors), touch - and sometimes they can just be sensed.
Intuition – Intuition is the state of knowing
something without being aware that you know it. It is
a knowledge that seems to come from nowhere, a sudden
revelation or insight without any logical evidence. It
is also called sixth sense, a form of ESP or psychic
ability. It is thought that we have 2 systems of
awareness: conscious and intuitive. The conscious or
logical mind (left brain function) is able to
verbalize what it experiences. It receives information
from the five senses, seeing, hearing, smelling,
feeling and tasting. The intuitive system (right brain
function) is non verbal. It picks up the same
information from the 5 senses. It organizes,
processes, records and stores the information for
later use.
The minds intuitive awareness system is believed to be
so efficient that it picks up millions of bits of
information that the conscious mind misses, and stores
it. There fore a vast amount of information is stored
in our subconscious.
Blocked Energy - Energy is believed to be the basic of
all matter, and psychics and alternative therapists
believe that a field of energy, called the aura,
surrounds your body and the flow of energy (chi)
exists within it. If these energy forces are
interrupted for some reason the energy becomes blocked
and will not flow freely. Chakras are an essential
part of this energy flow. If one or more of them are
closed, then the energy is blocked in these areas. It
is thought that’s blocked energy which is not cleared
can lead to serious consequences, affecting our
mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health, and
impeding your spiritual and psychic development.
Astral Plane – The astral plane according to some
beliefs is an alternate and non-physical dimension of
reality that can be visited during astral projection
or out-of-body experiences. The word ‘astral’ from the
greek word meaning star, originally described the
heavens of the Greek Gods, but as time passed the
concept expanded to refer to a spirit world inhabited
by etheric entities, disembodied spirits and higher
beings. The Astral World is believed to be invisible
to the ordinary eye because it vibrates at a higher
rate than the energy that comprises the material world
(earth). It is believed it can be accessed by astral
projection and clairvoyance and it is a world just as
real as ours.
Astral Travel – The astral body is believed to be
capable of a very special type of travel. While
leaving the physical body at rest, it can get up, walk
around and look at its physical body, explore
surroundings and journey to new places. You are fully
conscious and in control throughout the experience.
This process is called astral projection or astral
travel. Some people describe it as a feeling of
floating above themselves and viewing their body.
Astral Body – Various traditions talk about the many
bodies – the different levels of consciousness and
existence – that each person has. Some people think of
these as ‘subtle bodies’ or selves that exist in a
parallel plane but are all part of a larger
consciousness. An ‘extra’ self is sometimes known as
the ‘astral body’. It can also be called a double or
doppelganger, because it is a duplicate of the
physical body. The astral body can enter into the
astral plane during periods of sleep, under an
anaesthetic or drugs, by accident when a person is
unconscious or immediately after death.
Channelling - The process through which a medium
communicates information from spirits and other
non-physical beings, such as angels, deities or
guardian spirits, by entering into a trance or some
other altered state of consciousness. Many psychics/
mediums believe that channelling is a skill anyone can
learn. It is important to remember that everyone will
have a different experience of channelling, and the
insights received may come in any number of different
forms. It is up to the individual to translate and
interpret.
Ectoplasm – From the Greek words ektos and plasma, and
meaning ‘exteriorized substance’, ectoplasm a whitish
substance that allegedly extrudes from the mouth,
nose, ears or other orifices of the medium during a
séance, The phrase originated in the 19th century by
French psychologist Charles Richet.
EVP - Also known as Electronic Voice Phenomena. It is
communication from a voice recorded on a tape
recorder. EVP researchers believe the voices captured
are those of spirits of the dead, but sceptics argue
that they are simply voices from radio or TV
transmissions and being picked up on the tape.
Interest in EVP began in the late 1920s when the
famous inventor Thomas Edison predicted that one day
there would be a machine to allow communication with
Spirit. EVP was discovered accidently in 1959 by a
Swedish film maker.
Empathy – The ability to tune in intuitively or
psychically to the moods and characteristics of
another person, animal or place. Empathy is a vital
skill for clairsentients. Empaths are people with
highly developed feelings of empathy to others and the
world around them. They are sensitive to feelings of
pain and distress and in some cases physical and
emotional pain may manifest in the empaths own body.
Spirit – Sometimes referred to as the soul, but not
precisely the same as the soul. Spirits can also
represent places, such as the spirits of lakes, tees,
mountains and sacred sites.
Spirit is the divine essence of who we are, an
indivisible part if the 3 aspects of human existence,
mind, body and spirit. In many belief systems the
spirit survives after death and can be contacted by a
medium. Spirits are commonplace in the religions and
folklores of the world and come in a multitude of
shapes and forms, such as faeries, elves, demons, and
angels. In some cultures they are also thought to
personify characteristics and forces of nature which
are worshipped. They are believed to exist in the
invisible realm but can be seen by persons with
clairvoyance. They are also thought to intervene at
times in the affairs of humanity, for better or for
worse. Spiritualism refers to a belief in the
immortality of the soul and to communication with
spirits of the dead.
Spirit guide - A discarnate entity, often perceived as
the higher self or a spirit of the dead that serves as
a communications bridge, guardian or guide. In
Shamanism the spirit guide is know as a totem animal.
It is believed that every person has one or more
spirit guides from birth that remain with the person
throughout life. Some guides may leave and be replaced
by another one, as you progress along your spiritual
path. At death these guides assist with crossing over.
Mediums are often very aware of their guide. Some
speak to them in dreams, see them clairvoyantly, or
receive clairaudient messages through meditation.
Children who have imaginary friends may be
communicating with their guides.
Soul - The soul is believed to be the animating
presence within a person and represents the
individual’s core identity, as distinguished from the
physical body. It is thought to live on after death on
this plane, and depending on beliefs, lives in heaven,
hell or purgatory, is reincarnated or is transformed
into another living person, animal, plant or other
material. The soul is believed to be immortal. In
spiritualism the soul is conceived of discarnate and
indivisible and each person is normally allocated one.
The soul, however can detach from the physical body
and may leave it during out-of-body experiences or
near death experiences. It is also said to astral
travel.
Spirit Attachment - Form of possession in which a
discarnate entity attaches itself to a human being,
much like a parasite. Spirit attachment is similar to
possession but is the preferred term in modern times
because it does not imply demonic possession.
According to therapists that perform spirit
release-meant, most entities are not evil or demonic
but simply confused. Attachment is thought to oaccur
when a person dies but for some reason, such as
unfinished business, emotional ties, or lack of
awareness at death, his or her spirit cannot leave the
earth plane. The confused spirit attaches itself to a
human at random, although a living person is thought
to be more vulnerable if they drink alcohol, or use
drugs. Some attachments are also thought to be of
karmic origin and if the spirit is not released it may
remain attached for a lifetime. Symptoms of spirit
attachment include depression, mood swings, multiple
personalities and sudden changes in the behaviour. But
symptoms will vary
